Movin’ On Up!

This Thursday, August 30th is a very important show for us. It’s our last show live on KTUH FM Honolulu. That’s right, we’re moving! And this week is going to be one big party. We’ve got special guest and friend of the show (and KTUH), J Boogie as our guest on this week’s show. J Boogie will be performing at “Haight on Hotel” on Saturday, August 31 at Next Door. The Om Records artist is always very busy - we’re excited to hear his latest projects and what he’s got in the works.

J Boogie on The So Very Show 6.23.05J Boogie is a fan of KTUH and has supported several of our shows over the years. He is also a radio dj himself, having co-hosted “Beatsauce” on KUSF. His music incorporates latin and hip-hop influences with a healthy dose of jazz. He’s mad talented and we’re stoked to have him back!

Listen to 90hz.orgJust because this is our last broadcast on KTUH, doesn’t mean you can’t keep listening to The So Very Show. Next week’s show, on Thursday, September 6, 2007 will be our first show exclusively broadcast on 90hz.org. You’ll be able to tune in live, visit us in the chatroom and discuss the show and even make requests. Please take a little time to check out the station. Send us some feedback on what you think. We think it’s a great fit for us musically. The DJs on 90hz are experienced and committed to quality house music, creativity, and interactivity. The community is supportive, and we would say that they are “jazzed about non-commercial radio and artists with soul” - just like us!

To tune in, please visit our Listen page.

We’re grateful the the University of Hawaii for supporting and nurturing the growth of this show for nearly 6 years. We’re appreciative to all of the KTUH directors who have supported us and all of the djs who have been so encouraging. We’re thankful to all of the djs who voted for us to be “KTUH Best Show of 2006″. But most of all, we’re thankful to all of the listeners who have continued to tune in every Thursday from 9pm to midnight for over half a decade. (You like us, you really like us!) Special thanks to all of the djs and promoters who have supported this show over the years, and especially for our good friends who have provided fabulous live dj mixes for our listeners every week since March 2003. Let’s keep in touch!

There’s lots of news to report at The So Very! King Britt will be in Honolulu this week to play at Next Door on Wednesday and Friday. In between, he’ll drop by The So Very Show! We’re very excited to host King Britt on the show and excited to hear the eclectic and diverse music he’ll be playing. On Wednesday, he’s doing an 80’s set at Acid Wash Wednesdays at Next Door, and on Friday he’ll be playing for Next Door’s popular house night, Pacific Standard.

King Britt has long been a favorite on The So Very Show. His productions as “Scuba” and “Sylk 130″, as well as his collaborations on Ovum Recordings have all been played and enjoyed here on the show over the years. King Britt’s amazing talent and musical influences - from jazz, funk, hip hop and more - color his house music productions. He has done remixes for artists such as Ursula Rucker and Macy Gray, as well as for the prestigious Verve jazz label. This Philly native knows how to turn the funk on!

This is one show you don’t want to miss. Tune in this Thursday, August 23rd from 9p to midnight, Hawaii Standard Time to catch King Britt live on The So Very Show.

90hz.org - Our New Home

90hz.orgYou may have noticed some changes around here - and there are more to come. For several months now, The So Very Show has been simulcast on an excellent internet radio station called 90hz.org. 90hz fits us in philosophy, and most definitely in music, and we’re privileged to be broadcasting with them. Listening with 90hz also gives you the chance to interact live with The So Very Show and our listeners by visiting the 90hz.org chat during the broadcast. See you in the chat!

If you love house music like we do, then you’ll consider 90hz.org a find - there are shows featuring live house djs every day, including two shows I already know you’re gonna dig - Noise From The Void hosted by Jeno (Wicked, SF) on Tuesday nights and Sunday Soul hosted by Sunshine Jones of Dubtribe Sound System (King Street, SF) Sunday evenings. Enjoy!

Please tune in this Thursday and every Thursday to 90hz.org to listen to The So Very Show.

San Francisco Love

It officially feels like summer. We’re making plans for picnics in the park and pulling out those bright, slammin’ summer tunes to take us through our hot summer nights. Here in Honolulu, the summer has been great, and while the days are a little bit longer, the nights aren’t necessarily shorter. It seems like in the summer time, djs pull out all the stops to keep the party going longer.

DJ GarthThis week on The So Very Show, we’ll be celebrating the sounds of summer with a little San Francisco love. Our first guest this evening is part of the iconic Wicked crew, credited by many SF house lovers for influencing what became that unique “SF House” sound, Grayhound Recordings boss DJ Garth. Garth will be spinning at thirtyninehotel this Saturday, and he’ll be filling us in on the details on tonight’s show. We’ve got some of his new tracks to play as well. Garth has been one of our favorite djs, having visited Honolulu several times over the past couple of years. The eclectic mix of deep, dub, and disco that is Grayhound Recordings can be relied upon to put out some “go-to” records that stay in your record bag or CD case for years to come.

Dru DeepDru Deep also hails from San Francisco, and since his arrival in Honolulu this past Friday, he’s been on a dj tour of our fair city. On Friday he played at Next Door with Bassbin Twins, on Sunday he played at Casa, on Tuesday he played at OPEN at Anna Banana’s. His label, COA Records based out of San Francisco, contributed a cut to Mark Farina’s “Connected” CD a couple of years back. Dru’s style brings in funky, bumpin’ beats with energetic lyrics and mixing style that will get our weekend started right!

Finally, here are some quick picks for your house-filled weekend:

Kaskade at Next Door 6/29/07

On Friday, Kaskade will be shaking things up at Next Door. His third album, Love Mysterious brings even more of that instantly recognizeable, can’t-stop-singing-or-dancing-to-it signature Kaskade sound. Perfect for summer! Kaskade’s shows regularly go off, so get there early!

This Saturday, there’s Double Joy Disco at thirtyninehotel with DJ Garth. We’ve heard a lot about the relaunch of thirtyninehotel and their Saturday night disco party, and we anticipate that Garth will kick it into high gear this Saturday! There’s also a VIP Pre-Party with hosted bar 9pm-10:30pm. Space is limited, to RSVP, email VIP@thirtyninehotel.com.

Also this Saturday, Vybe Nights returns at Lotus Soundbar with The Low End Specialists feat. Ali.

Ali @ Lotus 6/30/07

Tune in next week for a live dj set with Ms.Angel, and guest Kittylee.

Aloha, a hui hou Haboh!

Haboh

In Spring of 2003, The So Very Show began a new direction. We said goodbye to co-host DJ Dora, as she went on to host the successful and always eclectic “Over the Moon” show, featuring, of all things, showtunes. I had a lot of my friends ask me who I was going to pick for a new co-host and I contemplated whether I should even have one. I knew that if I did have a co-host, he/she would have to be all about the music.

One Friday night, Bubbles and I went to Indigo (that was back when Bubbles still went to Indigos), and Haboh was spinning. We hadn’t seen him for at least a year - he had moved to California. Bubbles liked the way he danced, I liked the way he DJed, but neither of us knew him really well. As we listened to his music, we were reminded again of how much we loved deep house, and how much we loved Haboh, and how unique his sound really was. He seemed like a nice enough guy. After he passed the headphones to Chittom, I went up to him to say hello.

We immediately got into a pretty in-depth discussion (as I remember it) about house music. Bubbles was there, and after Haboh stepped away, he said to me, “You should invite him on the show.” I said I would do one better than that, I would ask him to co-host it. So just like that, Haboh became the co-host of The So Very Show, and he’s been doing it ever since.

It was the success of one of his first sets on the show that made us decide to do a weekly dj mix, which we’ve kept up for several years now. Being a part of the show is something that he has committed the past 3 years of his life to, and it’s been fun. Haboh helps me book djs for the show, promote it, do live mixes on air, select music, and interview guests.

This week marks possibly his last So Very show, as Haboh is moving back to California in the near future. He will be missed! Tonight, he’ll play a farewell set on the show and you can catch him once more on Saturday at the Living Room. Aloha, a hui hou Haboh! (goodbye, until we meet again.) I expect you to share the So Very love to the West Coast and Keep In Touch!!

Randall Jones, Tigerhook Corp.Randall Jones has an impressive resume as Tigerhook Corp., producing tracks for SAW recordings and Renaissance. Progressive fans are probably already excited. But deep house and house fans will be further intrigued to hear that Mr. Jones counts Josh Wink and King Britt among his mentors. Randall Jones is making his Hawaii debut at Lotus Soundbar for Vybe Nights this Saturday, June 23 and will be stopping by the show tonight to play some of his tunes and do a little preview set. For more info on Randall Jones, check out his label, Mynt Music.

By the way, congrats to Vybe Nights, Lotus, and Next Door crew for the fantastic Louie Vega show last weekend!

Keith Evan on The SV!

Keith Evan on The So Very ShowViva Las Vegas!
I am super stoked about tonight’s guest dj. I know I said I’d cut back on my use of “stoked” in 2007, but this is totally warranted. Keith Evan is one reason I’m actually thinking of going back to Vegas. Not to hate on Vegas, but my “extensive” experience in Vegas led me to believe that there was no house music there. And by “extensive”, I mean “3 days in 2004″. But boy, was I wrong! Keith Evan holds it down there every week, with residencies at some of LV’s longest-running and most house-head approved nights. Lucky for us, he’s also good buddies with Miguel Innes of Next Door, where he’s spent more than one Hawaiian holiday, and where he’ll be gracing the decks this Friday night.

Keith Evan & Ms.Angel at House Society party, WMC Miami 2007Bubbles and I got to check him out at WMC this year at the House Society/Kinkysweet party. You can see me flashing shaka, trying to pretend I’m Hawaiian. But seriously, Keith is a great dj, and I wish I had pics of him from the last time he was at Next Door, because he seriously rocked it out. Alas, I didn’t take pictures that night because I was, of course, rocking out. Please tune in tonight to catch him live on The So Very Show, and we’ll hear about his gig at Next Door tomorrow night, and his residencies in Las Vegas, you know, in case you were planning a trip there sometime soon. I know I am!

Lastly, I’d like to give a shout out to Ms. Larissa Gamarra. Larissa did a great job on Sunday, May 27th djing at Casa alongside vocalist and friend Sam Seven. We also had her on the show in March along with fellow HouseWife Michelle Sanz. Larissa has a great style all her own that really made her sets at Casa enjoyable for me. She’s moving back to SF, but hopefully she’ll visit us often, and keep us posted on her djing in the Bay Area. Aloha Larissa, a hui hou!
